oral hygiene instruction
A good oral hygiene regime involves 4 aspects:-
- Brushing your teeth and gums twice a day for at least two minutes each brushing session.
- Cleaning the spaces in between your teeth every day with either floss or interdental brushes.
- Brushing your tongue daily.
- Using a good quality antibacterial mouthwash twice daily.
Brushing – Whether using a manual or electric toothbrush your brush should have a small head with medium to soft bristles.
Replace your toothbrush when the bristles become splayed, usually every 2-3 months. (If you view the brush from the back and can see the bristles sticking out at the sides, it’s time to replace it). The bristles of the brush should be half way between the gum and the tooth for effective brushing. It takes very little pressure to remove bacteria, food and plaque, so avoid brushing too hard. Spend at least 2-3 minutes brushing your teeth to remove bacteria from all surfaces.
Interdental cleaning – Cleaning in between the teeth every day is essential for good oral health. The areas cleaned by floss or an interdental brush are the areas which are not reached by your toothbrush.
