I’ve Had My Teeth Whitened – What Do I Need To Avoid?

Jan28

After you’ve had teeth whitening, whether it be one hour laser treatment or our home whitening offer, there are a couple of steps to follow to ensure you don’t pick up any stains in your teeth. Whitening opens up the pores on the enamel of the teeth, making them more susceptible to picking up stains after treatment. To avoid any unwanted stains, it’s a good idea to have a ‘white diet’ over the next 48 hours. Some foods are best avoided in general to limit staining. Avoid red wine, curries, ketchup, coffee, red pasta sauces and smoking and then basically eat anything which won’t stain your teeth, like bread, rice, potatoes etc. Often after whitening, some people experience a little sensitivity for a day or two. What we say to patients which usually works, is to apply sensitive toothpaste to your clean whitening trays and wear in your mouth as you normally would, for a few hours, to allow the paste to soak in to the teeth and reduce sensitivity. If your teeth become painful and it doesn’t ease up, contact your Leicester dentist for a quick check.
