White Fillings

Natural-looking, metal free and long-lasting

White or tooth coloured fillings provide a natural-looking alternative to traditional amalgam fillings. Available in a wide range of shades and opacities, white fillings can be used in the front or the back of the mouth and can be designed to blend into the rest of your smile.

Why use white fillings to repair chipped teeth?

In the front of the mouth, white fillings can also offer a great way to build up cracked or chipped teeth to restore teeth to their original shape, as well as to close gaps and reshape uneven or short teeth.

At Hallcross Dental, our white fillings are available in a wide range of shades and opacities. Our team of highly trained dental professionals are able to build up white fillings through a complex ‘layering technique’ to create perfect, and invisible, restorations that blend into the rest of your smile.

Why use white fillings to restore cavities?

In the back of the mouth, white fillings are the ideal, natural-looking way, to repair cavities and to restore the strength and function to teeth that have been damaged by decay. They also allow for a minimally invasive restoration meaning more of your natural tooth can be preserved compared to traditional amalgam fillings.

What does white fillings treatment involve?

The area around the affected tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, and the decay is carefully removed. The tooth is then thoroughly cleaned.

An acidic gel is applied to the tooth to create tiny holes, which help the composite material bond effectively. This gel is rinsed off, and the tooth is dried.

The composite material, colour-matched to your natural tooth, is applied in layers, building up the perfect shape. It is carefully moulded to fit the cavity perfectly and feel comfortable.

Finally, a UV light hardens the composite, and it’s professionally polished. The filling looks and feels like a natural part of your tooth.

Frequently asked questions

Are white fillings better than silver amalgam fillings?

Many patients prefer white fillings for their aesthetic appeal, as they blend seamlessly with natural teeth, unlike silver amalgam fillings. White fillings offer similar strength and durability to amalgam and are metal-free.

Can white teeth fillings be seen in the mouth?

No, white fillings are virtually invisible. We precisely colour-match the composite material to your natural tooth shade, ensuring a discreet and natural-looking restoration.

Should I have my silver fillings changed to white composite?

We can replace your existing silver amalgam fillings with white composite if you prefer a more natural-looking option. The process involves removing the silver filling, cleaning the tooth, and placing the composite material for a natural-looking repair.

Can my white filling be repaired if it gets damaged?

Yes, white composite fillings are easily repairable. Because the composite bonds to itself in layers, we can often add more material to repair minor damage. In some cases, a complete replacement may be necessary, but this can usually be done in one appointment.

How do I look after my white composite dental filling?

Care for your white filling just as you would your natural teeth. Maintain a consistent oral hygiene routine by brushing and flossing twice daily, and visit your dentist for regular check-ups.

What is the difference between amalgam and white fillings?

Traditional amalgam fillings contain a mixture of silver, tin, copper and mercury making them strong, durable and ideal for the back teeth that are less visible.

A white filling, which starts off life as a softer and easier material for our dentists to shape and mould, is far more effective in repairing chipped teeth or restoring decayed teeth in the more visible part of your smile and the front of your mouth. Once moulded to the desired shape, a blue light is then shone on the white filling to harden it and to fix it into its final shape.
